In April 2023, Sephora announced the launch of its take-back program, Beauty (Re)purposed. This year, just a few weeks before Earth Month, Ulta Beauty announced the expansion of its in-store take-back initiative, called Beauty Drop-Off, to over 1,350 U.S. stores. Since the launch of these programs, both retailers have shared that they’ve redirected a significant amount of product waste from landfills.

“Fundamental shifts to more sustainable solutions in the beauty industry can only happen if every part of the supply chain is committed to change for the better.  Consumer education and engagement at retail point of sale can create the most change,” Victor Casale, co-founder of nonprofit organization Pact Collective and MOB Beauty, told Glossy in April 2023.

As recently reported by Glossy, Ulta Beauty data showed that over 86% of its customers say they would prefer to buy clean and consciously made products.

Amid demand for, and also legislation around, more environmentally-friendly products, many brands are adjusting their ingredients and packaging.

Below, shop from four brands that are committed to environmental preservation, either through sustainable packaging or eco-friendly ingredients.

The dermatologist-founded brand Murad is ramping up its sustainability efforts. Earlier this month, the skin-care brand rolled out refillable bottles which reduce its packaging materials by up to 85% while saving 15% on cost. Murad also has an ongoing partnership with waste management company TerraCycle, as part of its mission to make its products 100% recyclable by 2030.
